Tough Break-In Challenge: Tackling a Tough Door Lock

In this episode, I share my experience with one of the hardest lockouts I’ve encountered, involving a lock I purchased from a local big box hardware store. Despite my best efforts, it ended in total failure. I’ll emphasize the importance of not using rechargeable or lithium batteries, but rather alkaline ones. If the lock’s code is entered incorrectly three times, it triggers an alarm and locks out for a minimum of two minutes, giving us a unique security feature to consider. Tune in to hear more about this challenging and educational experience!

When it comes to smart home security, Weiser and Kwikset SmartCode locks are popular choices for many homeowners. These locks promise an elevated level of security and convenience with their advanced features. However, as with all technology, there can be challenges you might face when using them. Based on my personal experience, here’s a deeper look into navigating some of these challenges.

A Hands-On Experience
I recently encountered a particularly challenging lockout situation with a Weiser/Kwikset SmartCode lock. It turned out to be one of my hardest break-ins or lockout scenarios to manage, and it was a complete failure. To clarify, I had purchased this lock from a big box hardware store, and I was under no obligation to give a favorable review—hence, I can candidly share my thoughts.

Common User Issue: Latch Fit
One of the most frequent night call issues I face relates to the lock’s latch not fitting properly. It’s “oh, the latch doesn’t fit”—a common customer complaint. The design includes a bit of a security feature that prevents easy removal of the handle, which adds an extra layer of complexity during installation or troubleshooting.

Battery Recommendations
A crucial tip for anyone dealing with these locks is regarding the battery type. Through countless interactions, I always emphasize: do not use rechargeable batteries or lithium batteries. Instead, use alkaline batteries to ensure optimal functionality. From personal experience, neglecting this advice often leads to more problems.

Security Measures
The Weiser/Kwikset SmartCode locks also have built-in security features, such as triggering an alarm after three failed attempts. This feature is beneficial as it prevents potential security breaches, but it also means that if someone accidentally presses the wrong number three consecutive times, the lock triggers an alarm and enforces a lockout of at least two minutes.

Key Updates
Another aspect to consider is that the older keys are rendered ineffective once the lock updates. It’s essential to keep this in mind to avoid unnecessary headaches during key changes or updates.
