Hi, I am Terry this is “Ask Mr locksmith.” Today’s question is “What keys can’t be duplicated?” Keys can’t you cut in most cases stamping do not copy on a popular key like a quick set or the Schalge putting do not copy doesn’t mean a thing especially nowadays we have these automatic key machines you sort of put the key in and it cuts the key if it says Do Not Duplicate on the key it it’s going to cut it it doesn’t matter and most uh most rules are applied towards locksmiths so what keys can’t be duplicated there’s keys that are stamped Do Not Duplicate or do not copy it doesn’t really matter however how you how you protect yourself from getting Keys duplicated is to get a restricted slash patented keys that you can’t be duplicated it usually involves a key like a high security system let’s take one of my favorites is the Primus the key is restricted and it’s patented the key is only sold to locksmiths or the end user so if it’s a school board University hospital so the only people who can buy a key are the owners of the institution or a locksmith company so the average little uh key store in the corner of these little machines they cannot duplicate a high security key that has a patent on it so that’s how you have key control it’s covered by the patent it’s also covered with your with the locksmith has a user agreement with the manufacturer like Primus and if you duplicate a Primus key that you’re allowed to you’re going to lose your contract to be able to sell that high security system also there’s in some contracts there’s heavy heavy fines so what keys can’t be duplicated you got to make sure you get a key that is has a patent on it it’s registered as a restricted key and a lot of the good systems like the Primus they have a system where the lock is UL approved and what’s more interesting is that it’s pick resistant so we can’t say pick proof on any lock what we can say pick resistant and it’s ulc so the lock is UL approved as pick resistant not some made up uh oh it’s bump proof or as pick proof that somebody puts on a package uh I see even some some other manufacturers doing it I’ve seen pick proof doesn’t mean a thing it’s if it’s UL listed as a pick resistant lock so I hope this answers your question what keys can’t be duplicated it’s usually a high security system and it’s a patented key and only locksmiths or the end user are the only people who could buy the key blanks have a good day
