Pro Tip: Ever had your key just spinning round and round in the lock? It might indicate a common issue!
Two common issues encountered when an individual is locked out due to key problems. First, it addresses when a key turns 360 degrees without unlocking the door, indicating a potential issue with the tail piece of the lock or the bolt itself. Second, it covers scenarios where the key jams or cannot be inserted into the lock, suggesting a different kind of issue. The speaker emphasizes that picking the lock is not useful in the first scenario due to the key’s ability to turn freely.
When the key is spinning 360 degrees without unlocking, it indicates issues with the lock mechanism. Don’t worry about picking it because the key just keeps going round and round.

So if the customer is locked out, they’ve lost the keys, there’s two types of problems. They could have the key, if the key is just spinning 360 round, let’s say the key is just going round and round and round, then it shows me, it tells me my tail piece has fallen off or have a problem with the bolt. So no use in picking it because the key is turning round and round.
Or if the key jams on them, they put it for so far, it jams or it, you can’t even get the key in.
Understanding Locksmith Dilemmas: Key Spinning Scenarios
As a locksmith, encountering various key-related problems is all in a day’s work. One common issue involves key spinning, where the key simply rotates in the lock without engaging or unlocking the mechanism. In such situations, it’s crucial to identify the underlying cause to provide an effective solution.
The Tale of the Spinning Key
Imagine a scenario where a customer is locked out, frantically trying to turn the key in the lock, only to find it spinning endlessly. This peculiar phenomenon indicates a potential problem with either the tailpiece or the bolt within the lock mechanism. Attempting to pick such a lock becomes futile as the key continues to rotate without accomplishing its intended purpose.
Deciphering Key Jams
On the flip side, another frustrating situation occurs when the key jams in the lock, preventing proper insertion or turning. Customers may find themselves struggling to insert the key fully or experiencing resistance when trying to engage the lock. This type of issue requires a different approach to resolve effectively.
