Ask Mr Locksmith: Can A Key Open Locks from Separate Buildings?
Keys are typically designed to be unique to a specific lock or a set of locks. However, there have been instances where keys for one lock have accidentally or intentionally opened another lock. Here are some points to consider:
Key System Type:
Basic pin tumbler locks, like those commonly used in residential settings, are designed to be unique to each lock. However, the effectiveness of key control can vary between manufacturers and lock types.
To calculate the number of key combinations for a Kwikset lock with 5 pins and 6 depths, you can use the formula:
Number of Combinations
Number of Depths
Number of Pins
Number of Combinations=Number of Depths
Number of Pins
In this case:
Number of Combinations=6 power of 5
Now, calculate this:
Number of Combinations=7,776
Therefore, a Kwikset lock with 5 pins and 6 depths has 7,776 possible key combinations. Keep in mind that this assumes all depths and pin positions are available for use in a key, and it doesn’t take into account any additional security features that a particular lock might have.
Key Control:
Key control is a critical factor. Reputable lock manufacturers implement strict key control measures to prevent unauthorized duplication. However, if key control is not well-enforced, there might be a higher risk of keys opening multiple locks.
Quality of Locks:
The quality of locks and keys matters. Higher-quality locks often have more precise manufacturing standards, making it less likely for keys to work in unintended locks.
Master Key Systems:
Some lock systems are designed with master keying capabilities. In such systems, a master key can open multiple locks, while each lock still has its unique key. However, this is a controlled and intentional design, typically used in commercial settings.
If you are concerned about the security of your locks, consider upgrading to higher-security locks with improved key control measures is often a good practice for enhanced security.
