Adjusting the Lock Backset Mr Locksmith
I get a lot of people call me up saying the lock doesn’t fit. The bottom line is they haven’t measured from the edge of the door to the back set. And that’s probably, I don’t know how many phone calls per day. This video is how to measure it. So here we go from the edge to the center of the hole.
That’s 2 3/4″. Now this one’s adjustable. And so here’s the other one from the edge. This is 2 3/8″ Right to the center here. Now what we have occasionally, we don’t see too many of these anymore, from the edge here to the center. is five inches. Again, not too common.
Two and three eighths, two and three quarters are the most common. Occasionally we get five inch on North American locks.
Mr. Locksmith demonstrates how to measure the back set of a lock. It’s pretty simple. There’s three sizes and only two are very popular. It’s two and three eighths, two and three quarters, and five inch. And we don’t see too many five inch anymore on modern buildings. So what we have here, when you’re measuring the back set of the lock, We’re going from the edge of the door to the center of the lock.
So from edge of the door to the center of the lock, and that will tell us the back set. If we go from the center of the hole to the back set, this is two and three quarters. So that’s the back set. So from the center to the edge, or if we go, if we’re on the inside here is two and three quarters. This is the back set on yet looking at the lock or the latch.
So this is a dead bolt. Part here. So from the, on here, it’s from the edge of this to the center here. And a lot of these are adjustable. So from the edge to the center, that’s two and three quarters. When I adjust it, and they all adjust differently, from the edge of the, edge of the lock, the bolt, to the center, is two and three eighths.
Now, occasionally, again, it’s mostly the older ones, and here’s a real old one I got kicking around. This is the five inch. So from the edge of the door to the center. So these are the most popular measurements for North American locks on most residential and commercial locks. Again, it’s North American. There’s all sorts of other locks, but this video is just how to measure.
